This guide covers every crash type in 2026: startup crashes, mid-game freezes, Vanguard errors, GPU driver timeouts, and memory-related crashes. Every fix is OS-level, free, and fully Vanguard-safe.
Not all crashes are the same. The fix for a GPU driver timeout is completely different from a Vanguard block or memory leak.
Here is how to identify your crash type:
- Press Win + X, open Event Viewer
- Go to Windows Logs > Application
- Look for Error entries around your crash time
- Note the Source column
- Check %localappdata%\VALORANT\Saved\Logs for game logs
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen then desktop | GPU driver timeout | 02, 07 |
| Will not launch | Vanguard block or bad files | 03, 04 |
| VAN 9001 / VAN 9003 | Secure Boot / TPM | 03 |
| Freeze then crash mid-round | Overheating or RAM | 05, 06 |
| Random crash, no error | OC instability or page file | 07, 11 |
| Crash on abilities / smoke | Shader or DirectX | 02, 04 |
| Crash on certain maps only | Corrupted game files | 09 |
GPU driver crashes are the #1 cause of VALORANT crashing. Symptoms: black screen, 2–5 second freeze, then desktop. Event Viewer shows Display driver stopped responding.
The problem is leftover files from old driver installations conflicting with new ones.
- Download DDU from guru3d.com
- Download latest stable driver from NVIDIA/AMD
- Boot into Safe Mode
- Run DDU > Clean and restart
- Install fresh driver after reboot
- Restart once more
NVIDIA: Choose Custom > Clean installation. Skip GeForce Experience if you do not use ShadowPlay.
AMD: Use AMD Cleanup Utility first. Enable Anti-Lag, disable Radeon Chill and Enhanced Sync.
Riot Vanguard runs at boot and has strict requirements. If not met, it blocks or crashes the game.
| Error | Meaning | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| VAN 9001 | Secure Boot disabled | Enable in BIOS |
| VAN 9003 | TPM 2.0 missing | Enable fTPM/PTT in BIOS |
| VAN 1067 | Not initialized | Full restart (not sleep) |
| VAN -81 | Service error | Reinstall Vanguard |
- services.msc > find vgc > set Running + Automatic
- Enter BIOS (Del or F2 at boot)
- Enable Secure Boot
- Enable TPM (Intel PTT / AMD fTPM)
- Save and exit
- If still broken: uninstall Vanguard, relaunch VALORANT to reinstall
VALORANT needs DirectX 11 and Visual C++ packages. Corrupted or missing ones cause silent crashes or Unreal Engine errors.
Common after Windows major updates that overwrite runtime libraries.
- Install DirectX End-User Runtime from Microsoft
- Install all VC++ Redistributables (2015–2022, x86 + x64)
- Restart PC
- Test VALORANT
Still crashing? Run the .NET Framework Repair Tool.
Faulty RAM produces completely random crashes. No pattern — which is exactly what makes it hard to diagnose.
- Win + R > mdsched.exe > Restart and check
- Wait 10–20 minutes for Memory Diagnostic
- Check Event Viewer > System for MemoryDiagnostics-Results
- If errors: remove sticks one at a time to find the bad one
For thorough testing, use MemTest86 (bootable USB, 4+ passes).
Check RAM speed: Task Manager > Performance > Memory. If 3200MHz shows 2133MHz, enable XMP/EXPO in BIOS.
When CPU/GPU hits thermal limits, it throttles or shuts off. VALORANT shows a freeze then crash to desktop or full shutdown.
- Download HWiNFO64 (free)
- Run alongside VALORANT for a full match
- Check CPU and GPU max temps
- Above 90 degrees = thermal problem
Overheating fixes:
- Clean dust from fans/heatsinks with compressed air
- Reapply thermal paste if 2+ years old
- Ensure at least one intake + one exhaust fan
- Laptops: cooling pad + elevate rear
- Undervolt CPU with ThrottleStop or Ryzen Master
VALORANT is more sensitive to clock instability than most games.
- Open MSI Afterburner
- Reset to stock clocks
- Power Limit 100%
- Test 3+ matches
If stable at stock, try 25-50MHz lower next time.
Outdated Windows = missing Vanguard patches + known DirectX bugs.
- Settings > Windows Update > Check
- Install all including optional
- Advanced > Optional for drivers
- Restart and recheck
Run winver. If older than 23H2 on Win 11, update now.
Corrupted system files break DirectX, drivers, and memory management.
Then:
If DISM fixes anything, run sfc again.
Windows 11 forces hybrid windowed mode which can crash VALORANT.
- Find VALORANT-Win64-Shipping.exe
- Properties > Compatibility
- Check Disable fullscreen optimizations
- Change high DPI > Override (Application)
- Apply
Small or disabled page file crashes VALORANT during heavy scenes.
- sysdm.cpl > Advanced > Performance > Settings
- Advanced > Virtual Memory > Change
- Uncheck auto manage
- Select fastest drive
- Custom: Initial = RAM x 1.5, Max = RAM x 3
- Set > OK > Restart
| RAM | Initial (MB) | Max (MB) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 GB | 12288 | 24576 |
| 16 GB | 24576 | 49152 |
| 32 GB | 16384 | 32768 |
Known VALORANT/Vanguard conflicts:
| Software | Issue | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Razer Cortex | Memory conflicts | Uninstall |
| NZXT CAM | Overlay GPU crashes | Disable/uninstall |
| Nahimic | Audio driver conflicts | Uninstall |
| MSI Dragon Center | Background conflicts | Manual/uninstall |
| Citrix Workspace | Display conflicts | Uninstall if unneeded |
| Bitdefender/McAfee | File scan | Add exclusions |
| OBS Game Capture | Driver crashes | Use Window Capture |
